#69550 Ludovico Nella Mia Citt!

Posted by Susanna on 05 March 2010 - 03:47 PM

Ciao a tutti!!

Scatenatevi!

EVENTFUL

#73295 After Almost A Decade Of Einaudi Concerts - Isn'T It Time I Gave It Up?

Posted by Cathy on 11 August 2013 - 10:27 PM

Last Sunday I attended my eleventh Einaudi concert! It was, of course, every bit as magnificent as ever. The venue - London's Barbican Hall - was superb (apart from a distressing lack of Pepsi, which had to be remedied later on.) The company was excellent - on this occasion I was fortunate to be accompanied by a wonderful friend, who is also a long-standing Einaudi fan and indeed a member (and former moderator) of this very forum! The band - bursting with energy, played faultlessly and with such emotion. A truly talented team! It was the second time I'd had the pleasure of being part of the audience of the 'In a Time Lapse' tour, so perhaps there were fewer surprises in store than at Bristol's Colston Hall back in April; I pretty much knew what to expect, but I was still swept along and carried away just as much as I had been the first time. The lighting was certainly more dramatic than it had been at the Colston Hall and there was a slightly 'grander' feel to the whole performance. However grand the production may be, nothing can beat the simple, gentle intimacy of Ludovico's solo playing - can it? Mind you, when Marco Decimo's cello shudders everyone back to life during the waves of Experience, that's pretty amazing too! Divenire was another personal favourite, a piece which always triggers poignant memories, and could have easily brought me to tears, had it not been for several perfectly timed deep breaths...

As often seems to happen with me and Ludovico's concerts, there was a story, a journey... For this concert, I travelled and it entailed an overnight stay. This time, my relatively short journey was to London - and if I'm honest, I'm not a huge fan of our capital city. Some people love the hustle and bustle and good for them; I prefer the quiet sanctuary of the countryside. Anyway, sometimes it does us good to experience a contrast and because I felt 'looked after' and safe in the city, I found the hours passed too quickly and before I knew it, there I was on the journey back home. A rare and savoured couple of hours entirely to myself, my thoughts were my own and I started to think about some of my previous Einaudi concert experiences - and how much the style and presentation, as much as the music itself, has evolved during the course of the last ten years. So, this week at home, I have been looking through my 'Ludo folder' - my scrapbook, if you like, (and yes, I know it sounds a bit crazy and fanatical to have a Ludo scrapbook, but most of you already know that I'm a little bit mad anyway) and oh boy! have the memories come flooding back! So, I thought I'd share a few of my highlights here... and perhaps you'd like to share some of yours in return? That said, I'm not sure if anyone actually reads the forum anymore, so really this could be a rather self-indulgent trip down memory lane... ah well... :)

My very first concert was on 11th October 2003 at Warwick Arts Centre's Butterworth Hall. I had no absolutely no idea what to expect as my only experience of a 'classical' concert was a school trip to see Guildford Philharmonic at the Guildford Civic Hall in my teens! I remember fussing about what I should wear, worrying if the sound from the piano would be 'too loud'... as it turned out, after all the anxiety I caused myself, it was one of the best nights of my life! It was an evening filled with simple, beautiful, solo piano music. Just Ludovico and the piano. It was, I believe, tied in with the release of 'Echoes', and the melodies I heard that evening haunted me for days and nights afterwards. I remember being unable to sleep that night, the notes echoing round and round in my head. I remember that the following Monday at work, I was still unable to focus on what I was doing. I was completely and utterly hooked, there would be no going back... or perhaps I should have said, there would be lots of going back! Back for more!

Brighton Dome was the venue for the second concert. We took one of my cousin's daughters who was learning to play the piano and had come across some of Ludovico's work in her lessons. We sat in the front row, but the view wasn't as great as you might think. It didn't matter. It was the first time I became aware of Ludovico improvising, testing out new pieces and little meanders alongside the old. Again, it was just Ludovico and the piano. Simple and understated. One of the highlights of that evening for me was hearing him play Lady Jane... I'll share a link to this, as it's a piece not everyone will have heard. It is still one of my (increasingly long list of) favourites!

Back to Warwick Arts Centre in February 2005, where a real treat and a turning point lay in store - the arrival of the magnificent Marco Decimo and his cello! This must have been an Una Mattina concert - and ah, the beauty of Resta Con Me and DNA... it's definitely time I dusted off my copy of Una Mattina and gave it my full attention once more! It was also the first time I had met, in real life, anyone from the forum, but it was a pleasure to meet with Caroline and I still remember the look on her face when I gave her a banana guard! (I think you had to be there!) It was also the first time we had taken the children with us. They were very excited and made a banner saying 'Encore!' and waved it during the applause at the end. I remember it caught the eye of Marco and he questioned us about it at the signing afterwards. Happy times!

The birth of Divenire, for me, took place at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. This trip was supposed to form part of a special celebration of our fifteenth wedding anniversary. Very sadly, however, this was never to happen as my husband of 14 and a bit years walked out of our lives completely out of the blue a few weeks beforehand. I was completely distraught, all for cancelling my trip and burying myself in my own misery, but a handful of forum stalwarts convinced me that I should still go - and after some persuasion that's exactly what I did, dutifully accompanied by my daughter. There's no hiding that it was a very emotional concert for me and a very difficult trip to make, emotionally and in practical terms - but looking back, I'm so pleased I took their advice and went anyway! I met so many amazing people that night and so many friendly hugs were exchanged. Ludovico performing with an orchestra was an unforgettable experience and unlike any of the other concerts I had been to before. It also gave me the conviction to carry on, to fight, to become... whatever I needed to become! I will never forget being mesmerised by the sweeping bows during Primavera and the joy of hearing the strings accompanying pieces I'd only ever heard as piano solos before. The new depths, the transformation of the pieces - it seemed impossible to me that perfect songs could be just as perfect with these new arrangements. This man was a genius. He certainly knew how to pull at heart strings!

I didn't think it could get any better after that - in terms of a concert - but the concert that followed is one that I'll always hold very dear in my heart and although it may have been equalled, it is unlikely to be surpassed. It was my first concert at the Barbican. Naomi and her husband very kindly went out of their way to offer me a lift, knowing that otherwise I'd be unable to go. It was the Divenire Tour in action. I remember Svanire was the opening piece, which had me in pieces before we'd really begun, but for me the absolute highlight came at the end of the evening... the pure delicacy of Monday, followed by my all time favourite, the wonderful, heart-wrenching Giorni Dispari - with full string accompaniment. There were tears! Many tears! (Two favourite pieces, back to back... it was all too much, I was in Einaudi heaven!) After the concert, we also met again with Gabriel and Josh, who introduced me to Ludovico and he hugged and kissed me gently on the cheek. I never wanted to wash again... A very special concert indeed. (Please see Giorni Dispari link below)

Perhaps I should have stopped after that. But no, the concerts went on, and by now I was addicted! Another trip to the Butterworth Hall - memories of which are very vague. I remember meeting with Gabriel, Shirley and Ade - I remember arriving much later in Coventry than intended as our train was very much delayed... I remember the panic about whether we'd get there on time... and then, as it happened we arrived at the venue early and ran into Ludovico and Marco strolling along a corridor. An embarrassing moment... when I forgot myself and ran up to them to say hello! The concert itself, I'm ashamed and embarrassed to say I remember very little, apart from Andare at the end - and the pizzicato... oh yes! My only defense is that it was still a very stressful time of my life and I've had to wipe out a few months during that time for my own sanity!

Friday 3rd October 2008, however, I do remember very vividly. A return to a solo concert at the Turner Sims in Southampton. A modern venue with twinkling ceiling lights, that I remember thinking looked like stars. I recall observing the apparent agony and ecstacy as Ludovico played. I delighted at I Due Fiumi (another firm favourite of mine) and La Nascita delle Cose Segrete. After all the structure, power and energy of the recent Divenire concerts, it was sheer pleasure to sit and drift during this intimate concert. It reminded me that there was still room for both. Absolute bliss.

Concert number eight took us to Poole in Dorset, a gorgeous autumn mini-break and the stunning Nightbook Tour! Another modern venue, and an uneasy, but impressive start to the concert as it was during this tour that the concert began without the presence of Ludovico, who arrived on stage only after the Planets had begun to surround us! This concert was full of energy and it was here that I learnt to appreciate the 'bigger' pieces of music. A lover of Ludovico's more gentle melodies, I had never particularly been fond of The Tower, Eros, etc, but seeing them performed live in their full glory, persuaded me that actually, these pieces were every bit as remarkable as their softer counterparts! I think it was also here that I discovered exactly how to play a tambourine - Mauro Durante, cocktail shaker, extraordinaire!

Last July was, again, a little bit different. Another twist! BT River of Music brought Ludovico and some of his band to Trafalgar Square and my dream of attending an open air concert was fulfilled. Perhaps not quite as I might have hoped, but absolutely no regrets, I would do it all again. Waiting for hours on end in the searing heat, with no shade, listening to some truly God-awful music throughout the day... but our patience was rewarded. Ludovico performing at his finest to the crowds as the evening cooled and another moment that I suspect will never be eclipsed... hearing Alessia Tondo sing Nuvole Bianche! More uncontrolled emotions, more tears... there are no words to describe this. (Please see Nuvole Bianche link below.)

So there we have it really, back full circle now to In a Time Lapse, concerts number ten and eleven, at Bristol and last weekend's treat at the Barbican. In a Time Lapse feels like one of the most 'complete' albums for me - all the pieces sit beautifully together, and even played 'out of order' in the concert, it works, it fits, it gels. It has an ideal mix of soft and gentle, energetic and flowing. Most of the pieces stand happily alone, yet together they combine to tell the perfect story. I love it. I love the presentation, the showmanship that has evolved, the very evident teamwork, the energy, the emotion, the total magnificence of it all.

So, to answer my own question, after almost a decade of Einaudi concerts - isn't it time I gave it up?

No way! Concert number twelve is already booked for November! :)

Thank you, Ludovico - and your magical team - for a decade of beautiful music and memories.
Thank you, dear forum friends, for your company along the way.

#73185 New Album

Posted by Gabriel on 25 January 2013 - 12:57 PM

It's really interesting reading people's comments. There seems to be a lot of consistency and a universal love of the new album and I'm no different. In fact, I am completely bowled over by it. I deliberately hadn’t built my expectations about this release but had put my trust in Ludovico to deliver, and of course he has done so in glorious fashion. It’s very different to Nightbook: vastly so in my opinion, and seeing as I connected with Nightbook so intimately and perfectly, that might suggest that I would see In a Timelapse as inferior. But not at all. It is different, but in many ways; greater. Yes, it doesn’t have the edge and shock of Nightbook, but that’s possibly because Nightbook prepared the way, and it terms of the music and structures, it is not a leap into the unknown as much of Nightbook was. It was Ludovico’s artistic boldness which so attracted me then – as it still does. But I agree with Josh: where In a Timelapse is unbeatable is in its wholeness; it’s integrity as an album and how it captures the joyous wonder of life and all the astounding things, good and bad, clear and confusing, that we’ve experienced or will do so in future. Even Newton’s Cradle, which is arguably the most radical part of the album, fits perfectly in its place. Each of us will see and interpret the album differently - which is how it should be. For me personally, this music encourages us to embrace everything about life, to make the most of every moment in time and every emotion, melancholia and sadness as well as joy and exhilaration. Even more so than Divenire, this is one picture that comprises of many shades and colours. However, it’s not a picture of perfection, but one of reality.

The pacing is of the album is perfect and the music is simply incredible. It’s an album of motion – be that the passing of time or of us moving physically: walking, running, travelling along waterways or through underwoods; pausing to admire two trees and really seeing them for the first time, but then moving on because nothing truly stands still. Whilst it’s Ludovico’s most pastoral album, it is not merely a beautiful landscape. In essence it is an album about people; our emotions and our relationships, and our place in this amazing world. That’s how I see it anyway.
I love the tracks with the full I Virtuoso Italiani string section; with their shiver-down-the-spine power and climaxes. Daniel Hope’s violin is breathtaking: like nothing I’ve heard before. His duet with Ludovico on Underwood is incredibly moving. Ludovico’s playing is never overwhelmed by the power of the orchestra; rather he leads it forward and then gives it its head! His playing on Discovery at Night, Orbits, Two trees, Underwood and the awesome ‘Burning’ is possibly his best ever. But it is Walk that captures me especially. Listening to the album, I was waiting and hoping for the track that would move me to tears, as with Una Mattina, Ascolta and The Crane Dance. And there it is. The simple 2 note motif transforms the song from being merely lovely into something mysterious, ethereal and yearning – a touch of Einaudi genius.
This album shows an artist at his peak. Having said that, with each new album we keep wondering if Ludovico has reached his peak, but then he finds a higher mountain to climb! Perhaps he will end up on the moon, or maybe, in time he will travel all the way to the Sun. I hope so.

Noooooooooooo Cathy, still not watched it!!!!

So going to get motivated with the chores & dinner etc, then I might just stand a chance :) :) :)

Ohh, you've made me want to sit and watch it again now!! Can't do so tonight, but maybe over half-term... mmmm Mr Darcy... I should have been born into that era. (No wisecracks from Stephen, please.) I must read the book too. Jane Austen is one of my favourite 'classic' authors. :)
