Any Composers Similar To Einaudi?

Hi everyone, I've just joined this forum. I fell in love with Einaudi a few years back and have exhausted Le Onde, Eden Roc, Una Mattina and I Giorni.

I've read a bit about the Zhivago stuff he did - is this available as piano music? Are there anymore piano books of his around?

Also, can you recommend any composers similar to him? I went through a whole list the other day that were listed on a website as supposedly being similar to him and I didn't like any of them at all.

Thanks in advance :-)

Hello ratgirl!
Welcome to the Forum.
I'll let others suggest similar music- I do think Ludovico has his own quite unique style. Was it my site you visited? I'm intrigued!!!
I hope you find what you're looking for in terms of new music.
Stephen

I recommend:

Yann Tiersen
Philip Glass
Wim Mertens
Max Richter
Michael Nyman
David Nevue
Karen FitzGerald

None of these composers are identical by any means - each has their individual style - but sometimes there are very strong similarities, especially when it comes to composing with the piano as the main or solo instrument.

www.solopianoradio.com is also good for discovering solo piano music. One or two artists on their (like Karen FitzGerald) are fantastic, and others definitely have their moments (like David Nevue, and occasionally Greg Maroney), but in general I must admit it is not my favourite source for piano music (even though my music is also on there). It is solo piano, for sure, but for me it often lacks something of the subtelty and class which the above artists carry. But check it out and judge for yourself.

To your other questions, no Dr Zhivago isn't available as sheet music - you'll have to learn those by ear I'm afraid! - but you don't mention Divenire, Ludovico's latest album, in your post so before anything else check that one out...you're in for a treat!

Other notable albums:

Stanze (for electric harp, performed by Cecilia Chailly)
Sotto Falso Nomme
Luce Dei Miei Occhi
Alexandria

There are plenty more as well, and you should definitely check out Dr Zhivago.

Enjoy!

Hi everyone, thanks for all of your help.

I will have a look on last fm at that list of similar artists, as well as the ones suggested in this thread.
I forgot to write down Divenire  it's one of my favourites! I have that book as well.

Thanks again :-)

And I think that Josh himself should be added to that list, Ratgirl. I've also just reviewed an album by Ralph Zurmühle entitled Our Mother which might be worth exploring further, as indeed is his first album.

Thanks :-)

Apart from asking someone on here ever so nicely if they will work out Dr Zhivago by ear for me (because I am absolutely rubbish at working out music by ear), is there any other way at all to play the Dr Zhivago music??

Nope, I'm afraid not. However once (a long time ago) Ludovico mentioned the possibility of a film score book of sheet music, with highlights from all of his best. Nothing seems to have come on with that, but I wouldn't give up hope!

As for scoring it, if I had the time I would score some (providing Ludovico doesn't mind them being made available when there is a possibility that he'd release them in the future). But at the moment it's a little bit difficult as I don't have so much time and my computer isn't up and running at the moment.

But...you never know - you could always try messaging Ludovico's publishers. Ludovico will have scored all of his music, I'm sure, and that means his publishers probably have copies which aren't generally available to the public. For instance, I think it is possible, via his publishers, to buy the score for Primevera with all the string parts and a conductors score included for performances. Perhaps you could use the same route to access his film scores? If you find anything, let us know!

Did you check out any of the other recommendations? Last FM is good but not perfect for putting together similar artists.

And you won't find somebody who sounds exactly like Einaudi, because other people aren't Einaudi! But maybe you find some more solo piano stuff you like.

I'm not really a fan of his work, but if you can find the piano album by Patrick Hawes it's got a relaxing melodic feel to it

(ah yes, it's called Towards the Light - you can hear a couple of tracks from it on his myspace page:

Looks like you'll have to write to the man himself and tell him to hurry up with the next album. :D

Welcome to the Forum.

Try Ralph Zurmuhle. Stephen has a couple of great reviews on his piano-heaven site.

I can reccommend 'Our Mother'. It's Gorgeous!!

I agree with Stephen's recommendation that you should add Josh (Winiberg) to your list. I hadn't heard of his music until I found this forum (er, sorry about that Josh!), but it is beautiful and quite reminiscent of Einaudi. I recommend the Sunrise album, and the tracks "Tidal," "Rebirth," and "Sunrise" in particular as being very similar in style.
